Jewellery is worn, and worn things occasionally need attention. Nearly everything can be put right by a skilled bench jeweller.

Ring resizing

Most rings can be adjusted up or down. Plain bands adjust most easily. Rings set with stones all the way around — eternity and memoire styles — often cannot be resized without remaking them, because there is no plain metal to cut and rejoin.

Other repairs

• Claw and setting repair — re-tipping worn claws before a stone is lost
• Stone re-setting — refitting a stone that has come loose
• Clasp replacement — the most common failure on chains and bracelets
• Shank repair — rebuilding a ring band worn thin from years of wear
• Pearl restringing — recommended every one to two years for frequently worn strands
• Chain soldering — repairing broken links

A note of caution: please do not attempt home repairs, and avoid non-specialist jewellers for stone-set pieces. Heat applied near a set gemstone can crack it — emeralds especially — and a poorly executed repair often costs more to correct than the original fault.
